Navigational Equipment

When new in 1969 ON1008 “James And Mariska Joicey” was equipped with the following navigational aids;

Two compasses, firstly a Sestrel in the wheelhouse in a housing attached to the steering binnacle top, this compass had a light for night use which dimmable by way of reducing light modulating orifices on a bass wheel in the housing base above the light source. Secondly a smaller compass unit at the Radio Operator / Naviagtor’s station in the after cabin.

M.F. Radio – Woodson Clipper 50 with Direction Finding Equipment.

V.H.F. Radio – Cossor 400M.

U.H.F. Radio – Redifon 299.

Echo sounding equipment (Sonar) – Ferrograh combined inshore-offshore unit.

A Marconi intercom was fitted between the radar/radio operator in the after cabin and the helmsman in the wheelhouse.

Throughout her RNLI service ON1008 received updated equipment as it came into general use. Some examples would be the Decca Navigator and Danish made Sailor VHF Radio equipment.

Currently in 2020, ON1008 has the following navigational equipment;

Cobra MR F75 EU V.H.F. Radio,

Radar, Raytheon Pathfinder R70 – ex ON1015 kindly donated by Mark & Jamie Tyler.

a Garmin echoMAP CHIRP Chart Plotter/Sonar unit

and Comar AIS T200 Class B Transponder.

This equipment will be used as long as it remains reliable and effective in use, future upgrades and replacements will be considered when appropriate, hopefully not for a good few years though!

We have a set of original Sailor VHF radio equipment, vintage Ferrograph echo sounder and Taiyo ADDF TD – L 1520, DF set, all of these will be serviced to operational order moving forward as time and funding permits.
