This section of the website covers all technical aspects of ex RNLI Solent Class Lifeboat, ON1008, 48-005, “James And Mariska Joicey” with separate more specific and detailed subsections, namely;
Machinery – main engines and associated systems, generator, capstan, pumps and ventilation systems.
Electrical – electrical circuits, switches, lighting, batteries and all associated electrical equipment.
Hull and Structure – design, layout, materials and functions of the hull and fixtures.
Whilst primarily focused on ON1008, the technical information here will be applicable to all of the other ten Solent Class Lifeboats built between 1968 and 1973, the last three boats built (Mk2 Solents) had different layouts to the wheelhouse and parts of the engine room and these will be highlighted where possible. In addition the five Oakley 48′ 6″ (Mk1 & Mk2) wooden hulled lifeboats share the basic overall dimensions and visual form of the Mk3 (Solent Class) lifeboats, the unique aft open wheelhouse superstructure on the sole Mk1 boat ON968, 48-01, “Earl And Countess Howe” being an exception to the visual similarity. The Gardner 6LX engines, 2UC gearboxes, propeller shafts and propellors are common to all sixteen boats.
